What could pawsibly go wrong?
The better question is what could "pawsibly" go right with a game like Bubsy?
I mean, think about it. The whole awful thing is already built on the backbone of Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the least intellectually stimulating games of all time. Sonic, at least; was fun and was created by a team of professionals. However, Bubsy: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind has absolutely nothing going for it. For every poorly-rendered, overly difficult, aesthetically repulsive, head-scratchingly stupid, choppy voice-clip spouting, common sense defying, and just generally unpleasant moment in the game; it goes down another rung in the heirarchy of great game design. And let me tell you, it's pretty dang low on the monkey bars.
People like fun games, right? Games that they can actually play through and enjoy. A bit of challenge is never a bad thing, either: just look at Sonic's Labyrinth Zone. But even in the deepest annals of the Sonic game's difficulty, there were things helping you along. Golden rings, extra lives, air bubbles, invincibility power-ups... Bubsy has nothing of the sort. A mere gumball can shatter his existence to smithereens. Pitiful.
Also, I guess Bubsy is supposed to be a lovable mascot... but the dude is just totally unlikable! For example, at the beginning of the level A Bridge Too Fur, he spouts this cringeworthy one-liner: "More like a bridge too short!"... Like, was that supposed to be clever, or to make sense in any way? Even Sonic is funnier than him, and Sonic never spoke at all aside from the occasional "I'm outta here!". Maybe that's because he knew his limits.
Basically, what I'm saying is that Bubsy was a pretty bad game. But there were worse games out there. I mean, it was no Bubsy 3D...
